Oxycodone is a semi-synthetic opioid widely used in the management of moderate to severe pain; however, its inappropriate use has contributed to an increasing negative impact on public health. Despite the extensive literature on opioid dependence and overdose, there remains a gap regarding reviews that comprehensively integrate the physical, psychological, and social effects specifically associated with oxycodone use and misuse. This review seeks to fill this gap by synthesizing national and international evidence on the multiple consequences of prolonged oxycodone consumption, highlighting how these dimensions interrelate and intensify harm to the population. The main scientific contribution of this study lies in the integrated articulation of these three axes of impact, enabling a more holistic understanding of the associated risks and providing support for safer clinical practices, public policies, and prevention strategies. The findings show that continued oxycodone use is associated with the development of tolerance, physical dependence, emotional and cognitive impairments, as well as social repercussions that include stigmatization, family conflicts, work-related impairment, and increased burden on healthcare systems. In summary, this review demonstrates that the impacts of oxycodone use and misuse constitute a complex and multifactorial phenomenon, reinforcing the need for integrated approaches in prescribing, monitoring, and treating individuals who use the substance.
